President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration who intend to contest elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign their appointments by March 31, 2026. The directive, issued through a circular signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, applies to ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, and other political appointees.
The move is aimed at ensuring compliance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and promoting transparency and fairness in the electoral process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a timetable for party primaries, and the government is keen on ensuring that all aspirants have an equal playing field.
Affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the deadline. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes in Nigeria.
