The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed concern over an incident at the Federal High Court, Abuja, where a judge, Honourable Justice Mohammed Umar, ordered a lawyer, Mr. Marshall Abubakar, to kneel in court. The incident occurred on March 16, 2026, during a hearing involving Mr. Omoyele Sowore.
The NBA described the judge’s action as “not a recognised judicial sanction under our laws” and contrary to expected standards of judicial conduct. The association emphasized that while judges have the authority to maintain order in their courts, it must be exercised within the bounds of the law and established judicial standards.
The NBA reiterated that lawyers have a duty to conduct themselves with restraint, professionalism, and respect for the court, but also have the right to advocate firmly and fearlessly for their clients. The association called for calm and restraint, urging that grievances be addressed through proper channels.
NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, emphasized the importance of mutual respect between the Bar and the Bench, saying it is fundamental to the administration of justice. The NBA will engage with relevant authorities to ensure that the rule of law, professional standards, and judicial ethics are upheld.
