The need to contribute to sustainable waste disposal practices and nurture environmentally conscious leaders of tomorrow, Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), the foremost electricity distribution company in Nigeria, has joined forces with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to introduce a groundbreaking initiative in public schools.
As part of this collaborative effort, Ikeja Electric has generously donated waste bins to eighteen selected primary and secondary schools within its operational jurisdiction. The symbolic handover ceremony took place on February 26, 2024, showcasing a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and community development.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, expressed sincere appreciation for Ikeja Electric’s proactive approach to sustainable waste management. He emphasized the crucial role of proper waste disposal, applauding the electricity distribution company for taking leadership stance in fostering responsible waste management practices.
Gbadegesin also highlighted the broader initiatives undertaken by the state government, including the introduction of smart bins and collaborations with the Ministry of Education to integrate waste management into the school curriculum. He believes these efforts will instill a sense of environmental consciousness in the younger generation, shaping them into sustainability-minded individuals.
Mr. Kingsley Okotie (MNIPR), Ikeja Electric’s spokesperson and Head of Corporate Communications, shed light on the motivation behind the initiative. Okotie stated that the project, driven by the company’s Board, Management, and the Employee Volunteer Scheme/Give Back Always team, aligns with Ikeja Electric’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. He stressed the importance of cultivating sustainable waste disposal habits among the youth and future leaders.
Okotie further explained that the initiative seeks to promote waste classification, reuse, recycling, and reduction, discouraging the use of open dumps and incineration. He expressed optimism that educating children on the proper use of the donated waste bins would create awareness about the opportunities within the waste-to-wealth management cycle.
The beneficiary schools, including Ayetoro Primary School, Bariga; Ayobo Primary School, Ayobo; Oke-Ira Junior Grammar School, Oke-Ira; Ajao Estate Primary School, Ajao Estate; Ebenezer Primary School 1, Ojokoro; and Unity Junior College, Agege, are spread across Ikeja Electric’s six business units, namely Ikeja, Shomolu, Oshodi, Akowonjo, Abule-Egba, and Ikorodu.
