AAC presidential candidate to remain in custody pending hearing of bail revocation appeal
*ABUJA* – Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has ordered the remand of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in Kuje Correctional Centre pending the hearing of his application for stay of bail revocation.
In a short ruling on Monday, June 22, 2026, Justice Umar said Sowore would remain in custody until the court determines the motion filed by his new counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, seeking to halt the order for revocation of his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.
The judge also dismissed Sowore’s application seeking his recusal from the case on grounds of alleged bias.
The matter was subsequently adjourned to June 24, 2026 for hearing of the stay application.
Justice Umar had on June 16 revoked the bail earlier granted to Sowore and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear in court for his trial. The ruling followed an oral application by Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, counsel to the Department of State Services, DSS.
The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims against President Bola Tinubu in posts on X and Facebook, referring to the president as “a criminal”.
