The Kogi State Police Command has arrested seven suspects in connection with the abduction of passengers along the Ayere–Kabba Road, as a massive search-and-rescue operation continues to secure the release of the victims.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on April 13, 2026, when armed hoodlums intercepted a Toyota Hiace bus travelling along the Ayere–Kabba axis. The gunmen reportedly forced the vehicle to stop before whisking several passengers away to an unknown location.
The Command said it immediately mobilised tactical and anti-kidnapping teams, alongside local vigilantes, to comb the surrounding forests and flashpoints. The operation has so far led to the arrest of seven suspects believed to be linked to the attack.
While investigations are ongoing, the police have not disclosed the identities of those arrested or the exact number of passengers abducted. ASP Afusat, however, assured the public that operatives are working round the clock to rescue the victims unhurt and dismantle the criminal network behind the incident.
In a bid to aid identification and speed up the investigation, the Command urged families and relatives of the abducted passengers to report to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Headquarters in Lokoja. Specifically, they are to contact the anti-kidnapping unit with any information that could assist officers.
The Ayere–Kabba Road has in recent years been identified as a hotspot for criminal activity, with travellers raising concerns over safety along the route that links parts of Kogi and neighbouring states. Security agencies have repeatedly launched clearance operations in the area, but attacks on motorists have persisted.
The Kogi State Police Command restated its commitment to restoring confidence on the highway and called on residents to support security efforts with timely and credible information.
“The Command will not relent until the victims are rescued and the perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” ASP Afusat said.
Authorities appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified reports that could jeopardise the ongoing operation.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over inter-state highway security, with transport operators and commuters urging both state and federal authorities to deploy more personnel and technology to protect major routes.
