The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has denied any involvement in the death of Miss Mary Habila, saying he had nothing to do with the unfortunate incident that occurred at his residence.
Speaking on the matter, the minister said he was disturbed by the tragedy and called for a thorough investigation, including an autopsy, to establish the exact cause of death and clear his name.
According to the report, Umahi insisted that an autopsy must be conducted “even against the wishes and beliefs of the deceased’s family” in order to ensure that the truth comes out and to remove all speculations surrounding the case.
“I have no hand in Habila’s death,” the minister was quoted as saying. He stressed that as a public officer, he is committed to transparency and accountability and would cooperate fully with all relevant authorities.
Miss Habila reportedly died at the minister’s private residence, an incident that has sparked public concern and calls for an independent probe.
The ADC, in a statement on Tuesday, had demanded an independent investigation and said the minister should step aside pending the outcome. Human rights groups and members of the public have also urged security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.
As at press time, police authorities said investigations were ongoing, and that the outcome of the autopsy, when conducted, would help determine the next line of action.
The family of Miss Habila could not be reached for fresh comments as at press time.
