Gunmen attacked Mbalom community in Benue State, killing 9 people and leaving one critically injured. The attack occurred on Saturday, with residents saying the assailants returned at night after an earlier attempt was resisted by youths.
The Benue State government condemned the attack, with Governor Hyacinth Alia describing it as “heinous” and “unacceptable”.
The state has experienced similar attacks, including the 2018 killing of two Catholic priests and 17 parishioners in the same community.
Residents claim they had warned authorities of the planned attack, but no action was taken.
The government has promised to take action against the perpetrators.
