Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has resigned from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the governorship of Bauchi State in the 2027 elections. The resignation, effective March 30, 2026, was confirmed by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, and follows a presidential directive requiring political appointees with elective ambitions to step down.
Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and former Ambassador to Germany, cited the presidential directive as the reason for his resignation, which is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026. His decision has sparked interest in the upcoming Bauchi State governorship election, with supporters already rallying behind him.
This move is part of a larger trend of political appointees resigning to pursue elective offices, with several ministers and officials expected to follow suit before the March 31 deadline.
