Voters across Ebonyi State trooped out to polling units today as the 13 Local Government Areas of the state held Local Government Elections.
In a statement released on Election Day, tagged _“OUR DEMOCRACY, OUR RESPONSIBILITY”_, the state government called on Ebonyians to exercise their civic duty peacefully and responsibly.
“Today, Ebonyians across the 13 Local Government Areas are exercising their democratic responsibility in the Local Government Elections,” the statement read. “I encourage our people to come out peacefully, conduct themselves responsibly and participate in the process with the understanding that democracy begins at the grassroots.”
The statement emphasized the critical role of local government in service delivery, noting that it remains the tier of government closest to the people.
“Local government is the government closest to the people. It is where many of the decisions and services that directly affect our communities take shape. That is why today’s exercise is important to the future of our people and the development of our State,” it added.
Commending residents for the peaceful conduct so far, the government urged citizens to sustain the atmosphere of unity that Ebonyi is known for.
“I commend our citizens for the peaceful atmosphere so far and urge everyone to continue to uphold the peace, unity and brotherhood for which Ebonyi State is known,” the statement said.
It concluded with a call for patriotism above all other considerations:
“Let us participate peacefully, respect the process and continue to put the interest of Ebonyi above every other consideration. May God bless the people of Ebonyi State. May God bless Ebonyi State.”
