Presidency credits security agencies for successful rescue operation in Oriire LGA_
Pupils and teachers kidnapped by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom.
The Presidency confirmed the development in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the victims were freed through the coordinated efforts of security agencies who carried out a rescue operation in the area.
Details of the operation were still sketchy as of press time, but the Presidency assured that the rescued pupils and teachers are safe and have been reunited with their families.
The abduction had sparked widespread concern across Oyo State, with parents, teachers’ unions and community groups staging protests and rallies in Ibadan and other parts of the state demanding urgent government action.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, had earlier held rallies in Oyo, Kano and other states to press for the release of the abducted education workers and pupils.
Lawmakers in the Senate also pushed for immediate action on the rescue, even as they debated broader issues around security spending and the protection of schools.
Security agencies have intensified patrols in Oriire and neighbouring communities following the incident.
The Presidency said further details on the rescue will be made available in due course.
