Prominent Nigerian opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rauf Aregbesola, and David Mark, led a massive “Save Democracy” protest in Abuja, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of working with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to undermine the country’s democracy.
The protesters, affiliated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marched to the INEC headquarters, demanding electoral accountability and transparency ahead of the 2027 elections.
The demonstration, which began at Maitama Roundabout, featured placards with slogans like “Hands off our courts” and “Tinubu, let our democracy breathe”.
Atiku Abubakar described the protest as a “patriotic effort to protect democracy” and prevent dictatorship. The ADC leaders alleged INEC’s partisanship threatens Nigeria’s democratic stability, particularly after the commission withdrew recognition of the party’s leadership headed by David Mark.
