Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and former governor Olusegun Osoba have presented the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Olamilekan ‘Yayi’ Adeola, to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting, held on Thursday, is being viewed as part of strategic consultations by the ruling party’s leaders in Ogun State ahead of the forthcoming governorship election. It comes at a time when political parties across the country are intensifying internal coordination and seeking alignment with the national leadership before the next round of polls.
Senator Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, recently emerged as the APC’s candidate after the party’s primary process. His emergence positions him as the flagbearer in what analysts predict will be a closely watched contest in the Gateway State. Yayi currently represents Ogun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly and has built a political base that cuts across the three senatorial zones of the state.
The presentation to President Tinubu underscores ongoing efforts by key Ogun APC stakeholders to consolidate support within the party and demonstrate a united front. Governor Abiodun and Chief Osoba are widely regarded as two of the most influential figures in the state’s APC structure. Their joint appearance with the candidate is seen as a signal of consensus among the major blocs within the party, following months of quiet negotiations and alignments.
Political observers note that such high-level endorsements are a common feature of Nigeria’s electoral process. They are often aimed at strengthening party cohesion, resolving lingering internal disputes, and securing the symbolic and strategic backing of the federal leadership for state-level contests. For candidates, a public show of support from the President can help energise the party base and shape public perception ahead of campaigns.
Speaking to reporters after the closed-door meeting, a party source familiar with the discussion said the delegation briefed the President on the state of the party in Ogun and the steps being taken to ensure victory at the polls. The source added that President Tinubu urged unity, grassroots mobilisation, and issue-based campaigns.
The visit also comes amid broader realignments within political parties as the 2027 general election cycle approaches. While the Ogun governorship election is a stand-alone contest, its outcome is expected to influence the balance of power in the South West and feed into national calculations for 2027.
Governor Abiodun has in recent months stressed the need for continuity of his administration’s programmes, citing infrastructure, education, and investment promotion as key pillars. Chief Osoba, a former governor and APC elder, has repeatedly called for discipline and unity within the party, warning against complacency.
Senator Adeola, on his part, has pledged to run an inclusive campaign and build on existing development strides if elected. His candidacy is expected to test the APC’s strength in Ogun, where opposition parties are also reorganising and weighing their options.
The APC’s move to present its candidate early is consistent with a trend across several states, where ruling parties are seeking to avoid post-primary crises by rallying around a single aspirant and locking in endorsements from national leaders.
