The people of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) are at a crossroads. The incumbent Chairman, Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has had his chance to lead, and the results are clear: failure, neglect, and a council in disarray.
Under his administration, AMAC workers have been forced to live with uncertainty, their salaries not paid promptly. Primary Health Centers, meant to be beacons of hope for the community, were shut for more than six months, leaving residents without access to basic healthcare. LEA schools, meant to nurture young minds, were on strike for a session, with pupils roaming the streets instead of receiving the education they deserve.
But what’s even more galling is that Maikalangu’s solution to these problems is to buy votes with our collective resources. Millions of naira are being handed out to voters, not as a gesture of goodwill, but as a calculated attempt to buy their conscience.
This is not leadership. This is not service. This is a blatant attempt to perpetuate power and privilege.
The people of AMAC deserve better. They deserve a leader who is committed to transparency, accountability, and progress. They deserve a leader who will prioritize their welfare, not just their votes.
Maikalangu’s re-election would be a reinforcement of failure, a signal that the people of AMAC are willing to settle for mediocrity. But we can do better. We can demand more.
Let us reject this politics of handouts and vote for a leader who will put the people first. Let us choose a leader who will prioritize the payment of salaries, the reopening of health centers, and the improvement of education.
Let us choose progress, not regression. Let us choose accountability, not corruption. Let us choose a better future for AMAC.
