The Nigerian entertainment industry mourns the loss of a seasoned actress, Ethel Ekpe, renowned for her memorable portrayal of ‘Segi’ in the classic sitcom “Basi and Company” by Ken Saro Wiwa on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). The veteran actress passed away in Lagos, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and unmatched talent.

The news of Ethel Ekpe’s demise was shared by Shaibu Husseini, the Director-General of the National Film and Video Censors Board, through a heartfelt Facebook post. According to Husseini, the actress, also known for her roles in Amaka Igwe’s “Forever” and the more recent “Sons of the Caliphate,” succumbed to cancer on Wednesday.

“I have been reliably informed that Ethel Ekpe, (Ethel Aderemi nee Ekpe), the screen beauty that delighted fans with her inimitable interpretation of the role of Segi in the defunct sitcom on Nigerian Television Authority by Ken Saro Wiwa titled ‘Basi and Company’ has passed on,” Husseini expressed.

Ethel Ekpe, not only an accomplished actress but also a pastor, graced the screens with her charm and charisma, earning her a special place in the hearts of fans. Her iconic portrayal of Segi, a character that became synonymous with humor and relatability, contributed significantly to the success of “Basi and Company.”

The actress’s versatility shone through in various roles throughout her career, leaving an indelible mark on the Nigerian entertainment landscape. Her passing marks the end of an era, and the industry mourns the departure of a talent that brought joy and entertainment to countless households.

Ethel Ekpe’s contributions to Nigerian television will be remembered fondly, and her absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt. As the industry and fans bid farewell to this beloved actress, her legacy lives on through the timeless moments of laughter and joy she shared with audiences over the years. Ethel Ekpe will be sorely missed, and her impact on the world of entertainment will forever be cherished.
